How to Clean Your Power Wheelchair/Automatic Folding Scooter the Right Way

Cleaning your power wheelchair or automatic folding scooter helps to prolong its lifespan and keep it functional for years. While cleaning can often involve a lot of products and procedures, doing it the right way ensures that you do not damage any electronic and mechanical parts.
For instance, our product catalog includes a wide range of automatic folding power wheelchairs and scooters. These include the S7101 automatic remote control power wheelchair, the S3021 automatic folding scooter, and the S2043 manual folding scooter. To ensure that these works properly and remain reliable for long, it’s best to know how to clean them.
In this post, we are going to take a look at the do’s and don't when it comes to cleaning a power wheelchair or automatic folding scooter. We will present to you the easiest and most efficient ways, including a discussion on how often you should do it.
But, before diving in, we will take a look at the different parts of the average power wheelchair or folding scooter that you should or shouldn’t clean.

Common Parts of a power wheelchair/automatic folding scooter

1. Plastic panels

The plastic panels found on a power wheelchair or folding scooter can be sensitive to chemical cleaners. For example, our S7101 automatic remote control folding wheelchair features plastic armrests that are adjustable for extra comfort.
Chemical cleaners can ruin the finish, paint, or print on the armrest over time. To ensure that your panels and decals are protected, only use the appropriate sprays and wax to give them a shiny appearance after cleaning with warm water and soap.

2. Electronic components

Some of the electronic components that you’ll find on your wheelchair or scooter include a battery, joystick controller, wiring harness, and switches.
Our S3021 automatic folding scooter comes with an electric remote control folding system that allows users to fold it effortlessly. The S7101 automatic folding power wheelchair, on the other hand, has a high-quality electronic motor controller for smooth start and functions.
To ensure these electronic functions are not interfered with, avoid spraying pressurized water directly. The impurities found in water make it a good conductor of electricity. As such, it can become extremely hazardous to anyone in contact with the water. If any electronic parts get exposed, drain them completely and ensure they are dry.

3. Seat and Tires

While cleaning the vinyl seat and tires, you can use plain water with soap. For leather seats, the best method is to use a solution of one-quarter water and three-quarters vinegar on the surface and wipe it clean with a cloth.  Avoid using polishes as this leaves the seat and tires shiny and slippery. This can make the wheelchair too dangerous to use.

4. Chrome and Metal Parts

For parts that are finished in chrome and metal, it’s always best to first give them a decent wash with clean water. Once they are dry, you can use chrome and metal polish to give them that glossy and shiny appearance.

Most of our products, including the S3021 automatic folding scooter and S2043 manual folding scooter, are made from 100% Aluminum alloy frames to make them lightweight and strong. These metal parts can be easily washed with clean water and polished later using the appropriate product.

What to do while cleaning
1. If it’s possible, always remove the battery from the chair to avoid any contact with water or cleaning solutions. Our S3021 automatic folding scooter, for example, features a high-quality detachable lithium battery that you can remove before cleaning your scooter.
2. Always ensure your automatic folding scooter or power wheelchair is unplugged from its power source before cleaning it.
3. Keep soapy water away from the chain and bearings of your wheelchair or scooter. This is especially where you have an electromagnetic brake system such as in the S2043 manual folding scooter.
4. You can use an old toothbrush to clean areas that are inaccessible.
5. Always use a microfiber towel to wipe off any water or solutions that you use to avoid scratching the paint.

What not to do while cleaning

1. Avoid rubbing dust or dirt on hard surfaces. This can scratch and ruin the finishing.
2. Don’t clean your power wheelchair or scooter while its electric motor is still hot.
3. Avoid extremely harsh chemicals and petroleum-based cleaners that can cause damage to any material used on your wheelchair or scooter.
4. Don’t use brushes with hard bristles or steel wool to scrub any part of your wheelchair or scooter.

How Often Should You Clean Your Scooter?

Many people clean their scooters and wheelchairs when they get extremely dirty or when they are just about to store them for a long time. Apart from that, experts recommend regular cleaning to help maintain the functionality and performance of your scooter.
As a rule of thumb, it’s best to come up with a routine cleaning schedule. A weekly wipe-down is encouraged during the weekends while in-depth cleaning should be done every month or quarterly. While cleaning your power wheelchair or automatic folding scooter, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to maintenance.
This includes things like checking your brakes, lubricating the moving parts, inspecting wires and cables for wear and tear, checking tire pressure, and troubleshooting any electrical issues that you may encounter. This ensures your wheelchair or scooter stays reliable all the time and prevents major breakdowns or problems.
